Sicario (2015) Review
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Sicario is a haunting, slow-burning thriller that explores the brutal and morally complex world of the drug war along the U.S.-Mexico border. Rather than presenting a conventional action narrative, the film dives deep into ambiguity, where right and wrong are constantly blurred.
The story follows FBI agent Kate Macer, played with quiet intensity by Emily Blunt, who is recruited into a secretive government task force. As she is pulled deeper into the operation, she begins to question the methods and motives of those around her. The film places the audience in her perspective—confused, tense, and increasingly disturbed—making every moment feel personal and unsettling.
One of the film’s strongest elements is the mysterious and chilling presence of Alejandro, portrayed masterfully by Benicio del Toro. His character embodies the film’s central theme: justice in a lawless world often comes at a terrifying cost. Meanwhile, Josh Brolin adds a layer of ambiguity with his seemingly relaxed but deeply calculating government operative.
Visually, Sicario is stunning. Cinematographer Roger Deakins crafts a bleak yet beautiful atmosphere, using natural light and wide desert landscapes to emphasize isolation and tension. The border crossing sequence, in particular, is a masterclass in suspense, executed with minimal dialogue but maximum impact.
The film’s score, composed by Jóhann Jóhannsson, intensifies the experience with its deep, pulsating sounds that feel almost like a heartbeat of impending doom.
Sicario is not an easy watch—it’s deliberately unsettling and emotionally heavy. But that’s exactly what makes it powerful. It forces viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about violence, power, and morality. This is not just a crime thriller; it’s a gripping, thought-provoking experience that lingers long after the credits roll.
